Last year, China’s credit to the nonfinancial sector--a broad measure of corporate, government and household borrowings--topped 300% of gross domestic product, 60 percentage points higher than at the end of 2019 and now far bigger than in the U.S.
It has jumped by more than $43 trillion since Xi took office in late 2012, according to the Bank for International Settlements.
Much of the money has been wasted, financing factories and apartment blocks for which there isn’t enough demand, sparking debilitating price wars, and hurting profits and wages.

If high home prices and mortgage rates have kept you from buying a home, you might have to stay on the outside of the housing market for the foreseeable future.
Forecasters see the housing market remaining frozen through 2027, with stagnant home sales, slowing new-home construction, and monthly payments out of reach for many would-be buyers.
That’s according to separate reports on Monday by economists at Goldman Sachs and Oxford Economics, who expect mortgage rates to stay high to the detriment of buyers, sellers, and builders of homes.

Middle East oil flows, including shipments through Hormuz and alternative routes across the region, averaged more than 24 million barrels a day in the week through Oct. 18, surpassing prewar levels of 23.3 million, according to ship tracker Kpler.
