In an essay, the head of Anthropic laid out the rapidly advancing capabilities of artificial intelligence and said there needed to be greater safety controls across the industry.
Top executives of other major A.I. companies quickly signed on to the effort. Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI; Elon Musk, whose SpaceX rocket company has been ramping up spending on A.I.; and Demis Hassabis, the chair of Google DeepMind, wrote in social media posts that they agreed on the need for a slower pace.

Last month, the country added an impressive 162,000 jobs. The unemployment rate is low. The stock market and artificial intelligence are making many people rich and boosting retirement savings.
Yet surveys tell us Americans are still in a funk. Their sour mood doesn’t match up with what major indicators say about how the U.S. economy is performing.
That might not mean that people are lying to themselves about their experience of the economy. Instead, broad measures might be missing how much Americans’ costs have risen since the pandemic, and how many of them haven’t kept up.

Commercial fuel stocks around the world have been depleting for more than six months, and strategic crude reserves can’t be tapped much further. Attacks last week shut down a crucial crude pipeline in Saudi Arabia that bypassed the Strait, stranding at least 2.5 million barrels a day from an already tight global oil market, analysts estimate.

When Mercury formed about 4.5 billion years ago in the raucous collisions of the early solar system, it was a much hotter planet. Over many millenniums, however, its metallic core has cooled and contracted, causing the planet’s surface to warp and wrinkle.
Previous estimates suggested that Mercury had shrunk by just a few miles since its formation. Now, scientists say it is shrinking up to 30 percent faster than expected. It might have even shrunk by as much as 14.5 miles, which is nearly one percent of its current radius of 1,516 miles.
