Unlike models made by the leading American A.I. companies OpenAI and Anthropic -- which are closed and charge fees -- the Chinese systems are publicly available to download and modify without payment or approval.
At the same time, China’s A.I. industry faces challenges. Companies have struggled to make money from their users and face security questions about data and links to Beijing.

U.S. Central Command, or Centcom, which oversees the U.S. military in the Middle East, found that three specific strikes in Yemen in April 2025 killed 153 civilians and wounded 243 more, according to the Pentagon assessment.
Centcom is reviewing 15 additional incidents during the campaign against the Houthis that could have resulted in civilian casualties, the assessment said.
President Trump launched military strikes against the Houthis last spring.

As Anthropic raced ahead with a preview of its powerful Claude Mythos model, Brin addressed hundreds of employees in an April town hall, urging the company’s Google DeepMind AI lab to move faster, said one of the people on condition of anonymity.
