Economic fortunes of low- and high-income Americans are diverging--same pattern happening with companies.
At small businesses, which are unable to withstand economic headwinds as easily as their larger counterparts, years of high inflation, increasingly cautious consumers and tariffs are weighing on earnings and prompting cutbacks.
Over the past six months, private firms with fewer than 50 workers have steadily shed jobs, according to payroll processor ADP, cutting 120,000 in November alone. Midsize and, especially, large firms have continued to add jobs.

The Zhen Hua 29 sailed out of Shanghai in June carrying five enormous ship-to-shore cranes bound for seaports in the U.S. Gulf Coast and Jamaica. The ship’s journey epitomizes a moment of peak globalization that could be coming to an end.
U.S. officials estimate that Chinese cranes make up about 80% of ship-to-shore cranes at American ports. Some security officials and lawmakers fear that technologies that allow the cranes to be programmed and controlled remotely could allow China to spy on ports or shut ports down in time of war.
