Taiwan has vowed to resist pressure from Washington to shift half of its chip production capacity to the United States, throwing down the gauntlet to the Trump administration.
Washington has grown increasingly concerned about its heavy dependence on Taiwan, where chip giant TSMC supplies the vast majority of the world’s advanced semiconductors to major clients like AI chip designer Nvidia and Apple.
But many in self-ruled Taiwan view its chip-making prowess a “silicon shield” that could deter a potential invasion from China and rally international support for its security.

Eight OPEC+ members led by Saudi Arabia said they would boost production by 137,000 barrels a day in November, the same as the output increase in October, the group said after an online meeting Sunday.
The cartel wants to regain market share lost to U.S. shale producers, Brazil and Guyana, and to rein in other OPEC members that routinely exceed production quotas. Lower oil prices also would please President Trump, who repeatedly has called for lower gas prices at the pump.

The five-day poll, completed on Tuesday, asked Americans nationwide how much blame Democrats, Republicans and President Donald Trump deserve for the shutdown, now in its ninth day.
Some 67% of respondents said Republicans deserved a fair amount or a great deal of blame, while 63% said the same of Democrats. Some 63% also said Trump, a Republican, deserves at least a fair amount of blame.
