China is increasingly clawing back profits from state companies to cover some of the government’s spending needs, drawing on them more than ever during a year that saw an almost unprecedented decline in budget revenue.
The money sourced from state-owned enterprises, or SOEs, and moved to the general public budget topped 574 billion yuan ($83 billion) in 2025, or almost 12 times as much as a decade earlier. That amount far exceeded what China earned from stamp duty.

The war in Iran is choking off oil and gas supplies and spiking energy prices across the globe. And for many environmentalists, that’s a powerful argument for countries to curb their use of fossil fuels and shift to wind, solar and other renewable sources.
Some countries in Europe and Asia may try to install more wind turbines, solar panels and batteries to buffer themselves against surges in the price of natural gas, as many did after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. If oil prices stay elevated, electric cars could become a more economical option for drivers from Brazil to the United States.

For almost three years, those bills have followed Davine Greene, a nursing student who hasn’t missed or been late on a payment since buying her Kia K5 GT in November 2023. But keeping up with the payments has driven up her debt to more than $80,000, not including student loans.
Last week, she filed for bankruptcy to escape the burden, she said.

Missives from titans of business and politics show a striking disregard for spelling, punctuation and proper grammar.
Epstein doesn’t appear to correct Nikolic when he misspells his first name. But in another instance, Epstein was critical of misspelling. A contact forwarded the sex offender his daughter’s college application in 2013.
“I wish you had let me review before sending…the grammatical errors and spelling mistakes will make it at least harder for early admission,” Epstein wrote.
