Today’s artificial-intelligence-centered boom (or, if you prefer, bubble) has a lot in common with its predecessors, such as leveraged buyouts in the 1980s, dot-com stocks in the 1990s, and housing in the 2000s: stocks at nosebleed valuations, easy credit for risky borrowers, faddish new financial products.
But something about it feels different. The speculative fever has spread well beyond the usual stocks, bonds and property.
And official Washington, instead of leaning against the speculation, is egging it on: the Federal Reserve is lowering interest rates, the Trump administration is loosening regulations across the financial system, and President Trump’s own family is cashing in.

Rare-earths minerals, aluminum fire, semiconductor stoppage have hit carmakers simultaneously.
Assembly lines inside a Michigan factory that churns out high-end Jeep SUVs ground to a halt last week and won’t resume production until early next month. The cause, according to an official for the United Auto Workers, is a shortage of aluminum.
Ford has paused production at three plants for the same reason. Between the two automakers, thousands of workers in Michigan and Kentucky are now collecting unemployment.

This is “involution,” a once esoteric term that has come to define life for many in China and capture the biggest problems in the world’s second-largest economy.
Involution, simply stated, means that, even as China pursues global dominance in industries of the future--artificial intelligence, renewables, robotics--much of its economy is in a race to the bottom that threatens to devolve into widespread stagnation.
Price wars and excess supply are also increasingly a geopolitical liability.

There’s “no sign” that this was a cyberattack, according to Rob Jardin, chief digital officer at cybersecurity firm NymVPN, adding that it “looks like a technical fault affecting one of Amazon’s main data centers.”
“The internet was originally designed to be decentralized and resilient, yet today so much of our online ecosystem is concentrated in a small number of cloud regions,” he said in a note. “When one of those regions experiences a fault, the impact is immediate and widespread.”

President Trump has pardoned Changpeng Zhao, the convicted founder of the crypto exchange Binance, following months of efforts by Zhao to boost the Trump family’s own crypto company.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump had “exercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden Administration in their war on cryptocurrency.” She added: “The Biden Administration’s war on crypto is over.”

Since at least 2018, payroll-processing company ADP has provided the Fed with access to a data set that includes anonymized information on employment and earnings for millions of workers.
The data, which covers 20% of the nation’s private workforce, had been available to the Fed with a roughly one-week delay--making it both a timely and comprehensive gauge of job-market conditions.
It couldn’t be learned what prompted the change. The Fed’s use of ADP data wasn’t a new revelation.
