With trade negotiations between China and the U.S. showing little progress, Beijing is taking a new stance: Keep talking, but yield little.
That position was illustrated by the recent visit to Washington by Li Chenggang, a key member of Beijing’s negotiating team led by Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The trip signaled a new mandate from Chinese leader Xi Jinping: By seeking to engage with the Trump administration while making few concessions, Beijing is trying to hold itself up as a responsible party at a time of intensifying great-power competition.

Continued fighting between France’s main political parties and unresolved arguments over the 2026 budget, as well as a revolving door of failed prime ministers in the last couple of years, have led economists to ask: “Is France the new Italy?”
France’s debt pile amounted to 113% of its GDP in 2024, while Italy’s was 135% -- but the tables turned when it came to considering the countries’ deficit over that period. On that metric, Italy’s deficit came to 3.4% of its gross domestic product (GDP), whereas France’s was 5.8% of its GDP.

An airstrike by Israel targeted senior members of Hamas’s leadership on Tuesday in Qatar, a sharp escalation that brought the Mideast war to a country that is a close U.S. ally and a primary mediator in trying to end the conflict in Gaza.
The strike also killed a member of Qatar’s internal security forces and injured a number of civilians, the country’s Interior Ministry said.

President Trump asked the European Union to hit some Chinese and Indian goods with tariffs of up to 100% in a new attempt to ratchet up pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine, two EU officials said.
The request, which comes as the U.S. tries to curb Indian purchases of Russian oil and Chinese support for Russia’s economy, was made when Trump dialed into a meeting between U.S. and EU sanctions officials in Washington on Tuesday, the officials said.

American workers’ confidence in finding a new job if they lose the position they currently hold has hit a record low, according to new polling released Monday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The perceived probability of finding a new job in the next three months dropped by 5.8 percentage points to 44.9%, the lowest score since the Fed started surveying households on the subject in 2013.
The decline was broad-based across age, income and education groups, but was most pronounced among people with a high school education.

These petite patches of greenery have been springing up across the world for decades now. Japan has planted thousands; India, where the tiny forest concept was developed, hundreds. The Netherlands is a hotspot for them too, and they are also now beginning to spring up across the US. But it is the UK that has most recently seen an enormous push towards these miniature urban forests, with hundreds planted since 2020.
This wee forest was planted just three years ago, so it's got a long way to go before its Scots pines and hazel trees become what looks like a forest. For now, though, butterflies and bees skit around the yellow gorse bushes and tree saplings.
