Rising summer temperatures have softened Europe’s resistance to air conditioning and touched off a new political fight about the wisdom of installing the technology everywhere, U.S.-style.
A heat wave that hit Western Europe in June and July spurred a run on air conditioners in appliance stores across the region. The scorching temperatures came unusually early, before many Europeans had a chance to decamp to the beach for summer vacation, exposing vulnerabilities in the cities where most people live.
More than 1,000 French schools closed partially or completely because they lacked air conditioning.

Japan is playing down the risks from its trade deal with President Trump after the White House said the U.S. would direct $550 billion in investments by Japan and keep 90% of the profit.
Tokyo’s chief negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, said Monday that the government bank at the center of the investment deal would strictly review the projects it is asked to finance and approve only those that comply with Japanese law.
Critics of the deal have suggested Tokyo would have to follow Trump’s orders on what to fund, potentially threatening the finances of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, or JBIC.

Four years ago, gig work for North Korean agents turned Christina Chapman’s life around. On Thursday, it led to a prison sentence of 102 months, or 8+1/2 years, for the Arizona woman.
Chapman was given the sentence, by a federal judge in Washington, D.C., for operating a “laptop farm”-a room in her house filled with computers that North Korean scammers used to connect remotely to more than 300 U.S. companies over a two-year period.
Chapman’s operation earned North Korea more than $17 million, prosecutors said.

B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel released reports at a press conference in Jerusalem on Monday, saying Israel was carrying out "coordinated, deliberate action to destroy Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip".
That marked the strongest possible accusation against the state, which vehemently denies it. The charge of genocide is deeply sensitive in Israel because of its origins in the work of Jewish legal scholars in the wake of the Nazi Holocaust. Israeli officials have rejected genocide allegations as antisemitic.

In contrast, the share of Chinese smartphone exports to the U.S. shrank to 25% in the quarter ended June, from 61% a year earlier, Canalys data released Monday showed. Vietnam’s share of smartphone exports to the U.S. was also higher than that of China at 30%.
