Xinhuanet, owned by China's official Xinhua news agency, plans to invest over 1.1 billion yuan ($162.38 million) on an "authoritative" AI agent to help promote President Xi Jinping's thinking, Shanghai Stock Exchange filings showed.
The project, known as "Xinhua Yudian," meaning Xinhua lexicon, is "an intelligent agent for learning, researching, and disseminating Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era," the company said.

Anthropic is calling for top artificial intelligence labs to weigh slowing the pace of development, suggesting that AI systems are advancing so rapidly that they may soon be able to improve themselves without human intervention in ways that could pose significant societal risks.
The ability to slow global AI development would “likely be a good thing,” the company said Thursday in a blog post that disclosed internal data documenting how quickly its most advanced models are improving.

Hopes are high that it will produce a large first-day return, or “pop.”
That’s great for those lucky enough to have gotten in at the offering price. But most investors aren’t that lucky. For them, buying shares of recently listed IPOs on average doesn’t work out so well.
The average historical return for buying an IPO at the end of its first day of trading and holding it for three years is about 21% lower than what a value-weighted market index would have returned, according to Ritter’s historical data. This set spans nearly 9,300 U.S.-listed IPOs from 1980 to 2024.

The limits of great-power capabilities aren’t new. Both Washington and Moscow were humbled in foreign wars in the past. The U.S. had to retreat from Vietnam. Both were eventually defeated in Afghanistan. The U.S. record with the occupation of Iraq is mixed at best.
