A Chinese military court issued suspended death sentences to two former defense ministers for corruption, punctuating a broad purge of China’s armed forces that has ousted most of the high command.
The suspended death sentences are the most severe punishment known to be meted out against disgraced generals under Chinese leader Xi Jinping, surpassing the life sentences previously announced for purged military commanders of similar rank.

Start with unemployment. On Friday, the Labor Department reported that the unemployment rate held steady in April at 4.3%. That is low historically, but notably above the multidecade low of 3.4% it hit three years earlier.
In the nearly 80 years the Labor Department has been keeping records, whenever the unemployment rate has made a clear turn higher, a recession has always followed. “We’ve never had a period before where the unemployment rate has sort of just slowly increased for three years,” said Harvard University economist Lawrence Katz.

Millions of borrowers are defaulting on their student loans, and they are nearly 40 years old on average.
Since a pandemic-era pause on student-loan repayments ended in 2023, the federal government has been pushing people to start repaying their loans. In the fourth quarter of last year, those who failed to restart payments began defaulting, meaning they hit 270 days past due on their payments.
The New York Fed estimated that more than 3.5 million people defaulted between October and March.
