The U.S. labor market bounced back last month with healthy job growth and a decline in unemployment. But another trend also came into focus: the continuing fall in labor-force participation.
The share of the working-age population that is either working or looking for work--known as the labor-force participation rate--edged down to 61.9% in March, its lowest level since 1977, outside of the pandemic.
The continued aging of the population and the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown have helped drive the fall in recent months, economists said.

The U.S. plan to wrest control of the key waterway from Iran would potentially cut off the roughly 2 million barrels of oil that Iran has continued to ship through the Strait each day, most of which was headed to China.
With 20% of the world’s daily supply of oil and liquefied natural gas already trapped behind the Strait, Japan, South Korea and other Asian countries that rely on the Middle East are looking elsewhere to replenish their dwindling energy supplies. Here’s what that means for the U.S. energy market:

The Trump administration’s tougher immigration enforcement is making that harder in the U.S. restaurant industry, where foreign-born workers make up about 20% of jobs.

Cuts of cables to Taiwan in 2023 and 2025 were notably precise in hitting areas where they would wreak the most havoc, Hsu testified.
After an incident last year, a Taiwan court found the Togo-flagged ship’s captain, a Chinese national, responsible for intentionally damaging a cable and sentenced him to three years in prison. China later said a Taiwanese smuggling operation was to blame.
China could be seeking to boost its cable-cutting abilities.

The number of births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44--the general fertility rate--reached a record low of 53.1 in 2025, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The rate has mostly headed down since 2007, a prerecession peak when millennial women started to enter their prime childbearing years.
One long-term trend driving the slide: a sharp decrease in birthrates for teens and women in their 20s. In 2025, birthrates for women in their late 30s exceeded those for women in their early 20s for the first time.
