Israel is arming a small Palestinian militia that controls a slice of territory in southern Gaza as part of a plan to build up local resistance to Hamas, offering a glimpse into its postwar vision for the Strip.
The head of the militia, Yasser Abu Shabab, has been given arms by the Israeli military that it found inside Gaza during the war, according to an Israeli official. A video released this week by Abu Shabab’s militia, which calls itself the Popular Force, shows armed men carrying what appeared to be M16 and Kalashnikov rifles patrolling the streets.

A Chinese aircraft carrier is conducting drills hundreds of miles south of Japan’s main island, Japanese officials said Monday, venturing into waters that could be strategically vital in a conflict with the U.S. in the Pacific.
The Liaoning, one of China’s two operational aircraft carriers, and at least seven other Chinese navy ships were operating east of Iwo Jima for the first time over the weekend, the Japanese military said.
The waters southeast of Japan where the Liaoning is now sailing would be particularly important in a Chinese military effort to take over Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy that Beijing considers its own territory to be seized by force if necessary.

Russia and Ukraine said they exchanged an unspecified number of sick and wounded prisoners of war on Tuesday under an agreement reached at peace talks last week in Turkey.
The handover took place after an initial swap of prisoners under the age of 25 was conducted on Monday.
"Today marks the first stage of the return of our seriously wounded and injured soldiers from Russian captivity. All of them require immediate medical attention. This is an important humanitarian act," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Telegram, adding that exchanges would continue.

Beijing’s agreement to temporarily restore rare-earth licenses was one of the key breakthroughs in the latest round of intense trade talks in London, but the six-month limit illustrated how each side is retaining the tools to easily escalate tensions again.
