このページの使い方
１、まずは原文を読んで、だいたいどのような内容かを推測する
２、単語、表現を参照しながら、もう一度読む
３、日本語訳で確認する
４、最後に原文を音読する
５、日本語訳を読むだけでも、１週間の出来事が分かる
日本語訳は可能な限り前から後ろに訳している。その癖をつけないと、早く読んだり、耳で聞いて理解するようにはならないからだ。話し言葉は前から順に消えていくので、聞き手は前から順に理解している。日本語は結論が後に来ると言われるが、文脈から聞き手は結末を予測しているのだ。
英語では結論が先に来るので、聞き手はその詳細を期待することになる。例えば、何かが最も上がったなどという表現の後には、期間や範囲を限定する表現が続く。その後に理由やその他の詳細が続くのだ。だから英語での討論では「いったい何がいいたいの？」などということはなく、聞き手が話し手を途中で遮って、「あなたの言いたいことは分かるが、、、」と自分の意見を述べることもできるのだ。

(8/21：参照）Historic ‘Anti-China’ Military Pact Between Australia And Japan Comes Into Force To Counter Belligerent Beijing
Reflecting the Special Strategic Partnership between Australia and Japan at a time when both are worried over the aggressive designs of China in the Indo-Pacific, the Japan-Australia Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) came into effect on August 13.
It is the first visiting forces agreement Japan has struck with any country after the United States. And Australia is the second country whose armed forces will now be allowed on Japanese soil after the US.
When it comes to practical outcomes, this Agreement will see more training and exercises between the two countries that will include, among others:

In the early days of America’s war on terror, U.S. authorities detained Ahmed Rabbani thinking he was someone else. They soon realized their mistake but later said he himself had facilitated terrorists.
Rabbani denies that, and he was never charged with a crime. After 18 and half years at Guantanamo Bay, he stepped off a plane in Pakistan in February--a free but broken man.
Through it all, he said, his only means of escape was art. He began making paintings inside his cell, standing day and night at an easel, sometimes forgetting where he was and what had happened since he was detained in 2002. By the time of his release, he had made hundreds of paintings on canvas and scraps of fabric torn from old prisoner clothing or bedsheets.

The Federal Reserve’s aggressive interest-rate-raising campaign to tame inflation has upended the long-held paradigm that “there is no alternative” to stocks. India successfully landed its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the moon’s south pole Wednesday, days after a similar Russian mission ended when its probe crashed into the lunar surface.
India is the first country to reach that part of the moon’s surface, an achievement expected to kick off a new era of space exploration.
Scientists and engineers hope to tap water resources at the lunar south pole to facilitate missions to other parts of the solar system and future efforts for long-term settlements on the moon.

The Brics group of emerging nations has invited six additional countries to join the bloc in an effort to grow its global importance and ability to challenge the West on key political and economic issues.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Argentina, Iran, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates have been invited to join Brics, which currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the bloc’s leaders said on Thursday, the final day of a summit in Johannesburg.
The expansion of Brics is a victory for Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, who had pushed to grow the bloc in the face of intensifying geopolitical and economic competition with the West.

On the outskirts of the Chinese city of Hangzhou, a small dilapidated temple overlooks a graveyard of sorts: a series of fields where hundreds upon hundreds of electric cars have been abandoned among weeds and garbage.
Similar pools of unwanted battery-powered vehicles have sprouted up in at least half a dozen cities across China, though a few have been cleaned up.
In Hangzhou, some cars have been left for so long that plants are sprouting from their trunks. Others were discarded in such a hurry that fluffy toys still sit on their dashboards.
