このページの使い方
１、まずは原文を読んで、だいたいどのような内容かを推測する
２、単語、表現を参照しながら、もう一度読む
３、日本語訳で確認する
４、最後に原文を音読する
５、日本語訳を読むだけでも、１週間の出来事が分かる
日本語訳は可能な限り前から後ろに訳している。その癖をつけないと、早く読んだり、耳で聞いて理解するようにはならないからだ。話し言葉は前から順に消えていくので、聞き手は前から順に理解している。日本語は結論が後に来ると言われるが、文脈から聞き手は結末を予測しているのだ。
英語では結論が先に来るので、聞き手はその詳細を期待することになる。例えば、何かが最も上がったなどという表現の後には、期間や範囲を限定する表現が続く。その後に理由やその他の詳細が続くのだ。だから英語での討論では「いったい何がいいたいの？」などということはなく、聞き手が話し手を途中で遮って、「あなたの言いたいことは分かるが、、、」と自分の意見を述べることもできるのだ。

The number of vessels waiting to cross the Panama Canal has reached 154, and slots for carriers to book passage are being reduced in an effort to manage congestion caused by ongoing drought conditions that have roiled the major shipping gateway since the spring. The current wait time to cross the canal is now around 21 days.
The Panama Canal is a critical trade link for U.S. shippers heading to Gulf and East Coast ports. The U.S. is the largest user of the Panama Canal, with total U.S. commodity export and import containers representing about 73% of Panama Canal traffic. Forty percent of all U.S. container traffic travels through the canal every year, about $270 billion in cargo.

The data so far this year are up roughly 11% from 2022, a sharp jump that would represent by far the biggest recorded increase since the government started tracking comparable numbers in 2007. The next highest increase was a 2.7% jump in 2019, excluding an artificially high increase last year caused by pandemic counting interruptions.
This year’s surge reflects a host of pressures around the U.S. such as rising housing costs, lack of affordable rental units and the nation’s continuing opioid crisis, according to reports from nonprofits and government agencies counting the homeless.

Japan’s economy expanded at a much faster pace than expected in the April-June quarter thanks to robust exports, outpacing growth in the U.S. and China.
Japan’s real gross domestic product increased 1.5% in the three months to June from the previous quarter, compared with 0.9% growth in the January-March period.
One reason was strength in car exports, which had struggled until recently because supply-chain problems made it hard for Japan’s car factories to meet customer demand. Overall exports rose 3.2% from the previous quarter, a strong pace in a global economy where trade overall is rising only weakly.
Meanwhile, a surge in foreign visitors to Japan helped increase spending.
Economists said weakness in Japan’s trading partners, including the U.S. and China, means the rise in exports may not last.

Stocks fell on Thursday, extending August declines, with investors worried anew about continued Fed rate hikes. Fed officials still see inflation risks and the potential need for higher interest rates, according to meeting minutes released this week.
