Twenty people in Japan who took Amgen’s rare-disease drug Tavneos have died, and at least 22 developed a potentially fatal liver injury, according to Kissei Pharmaceutical, which sells the medicine in the country.
Kissei told doctors Friday to stop prescribing the drug to new patients.
The Japanese drugmaker said the 20 deaths occurred in people who had suffered a serious liver “impairment” and attributed 13 of the deaths to a condition, called vanishing bile duct syndrome, marked by the destruction of the ducts that carry bile out of the liver.

Eight in 10 Americans say gasoline prices are straining their household budgets, according to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll.
The Iran war has pushed average pump prices up 55% since late February, and that’s just the most visible part of the war’s costs that households can see. The long-term fiscal costs are just as real, even if less apparent.
April’s U.S. inflation data has come in hot. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index rose 3.8% on a year-over-year basis, the highest reading since May 2023 and well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% inflation target. Energy prices have played a central role in the higher inflation reading.

Before he entered the White House, President Trump was a real-estate developer and speculator. Lately, his fortune has been wagered on some Big Tech stocks.
Money managers for the president made more than 3,700 trades in the first quarter, including million-dollar purchases of Nvidia, Dell and other Big Tech stocks. Trump’s managers pared his holdings in Microsoft and Amazon with sizable sales in the quarter.
The disclosures, made by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, showed the pace of trading on the president’s behalf far exceeded previous quarters.

An April report from Gallup showed that a rising number of Generation Z - those born between 1997 and 2012 - were anxious or angry about AI, while those who said they were hopeful or excited by it had fallen sharply compared with a year earlier.
Nearly half of respondents said the risks of AI outweigh the benefits, while 15% said it was a net positive, a much bleaker view than a year ago. Most recognized the need to be AI-savvy but said it hindered deeper learning and creativity.

When Meta Platforms said in April that it would lay off 10% of its staff, Allen Sun quickly booked a trip to Menlo Park, Calif.
It was a prime opportunity. Sun, a Beijing-based headhunter for some of the biggest Chinese tech companies, works to lure China-born talent back home, targeting people at U.S.-based companies such as Meta, Google, Anthropic and Amazon.
Some clients are authorizing him to promise salaries that match or exceed the workers’ Silicon Valley pay--a windfall given China’s lower cost of living.
“The compensation is very competitive,” said Sun.
